Practical Approaches to Equine Wound Management – From Basic to Advanced Techniques

  • Lecturer: Katarina Miljak, DVM
  • Date: 24 February 2026
  • Location: Equine examination room and stable, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb
  • Workshop language: English and Croatian

The workshop aims to enhance the participants’ knowledge and practical skills in the field of equine wound management — from acute, superficial injuries to complex, contaminated, and chronic wounds. The practical component will be conducted on equine cadaver parts (distal limbs and the head), allowing a realistic presentation of anatomical structures and performing procedures in controlled conditions. These cadaver parts have been selected because they represent the most common sites of injury in equines, and their anatomical complexity and functional demands present additional therapeutic challenges.

During practical work, the following will be addressed:

  • assessment of the type and extent of tissue damage
  • selection of the optimal diagnostic methods
  • regional analgesia of the head and the distal limb
  • optimal surgical wound-management technique
  • application of modern dressings in wound treatment
  • application of antiseptic and antimicrobial therapeutic procedures
  • analysis and discussion of the challenges associated with wound management in specific regions (peri-ocular area and distal limb segments)
  • postoperative care and prevention of complications

Through hands-on practice, demonstrations, and guided discussions, participants will develop the skills required for making appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic decisions in clinical practice.

The workshop is intended exclusively for veterinary medicine students who have completed the mandatory course Surgery, Orthopaedics and Ophthalmology II.
